China Tour October 2009

Monokino

During 2008 Monokino toured China twice, playing at both the Midi Music festival and the Guangzhou Music Festival as well as in numerous name clubs in Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Guangzhou and Chongqing. Supported by consistently good reviews of their debut album, Monokino will revive their 2008 Chinese tour commencing in October 2009.

“One of the top bands to see.” Variety magazine (USA, 2009)

“Best-All-Around-the-World-in-one-band.” The Chicago Tribune (USA, 2009)

The band’s debut album “Human Error” came out in late 2008 on China’s famous indie label, ‘Modern Sky’. In 2009, the album was also released in the Netherlands by ‘My First Sonny Weissmuller’. Monokino toured the USA in 2009 playing at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas with Boys Noize & Kap Bambino. In New York, Monokino supported Kristeen Young (known for her work with David Bowie, Brian Molko, Morrissey and producer Tony Visconti).

“These guys remind me of a band that escaped with their creativity-nontraditional melodies and voice flirting with electronics and a noir-new wave feel-Human Error is a gem of an album.” Over Your Radar (USA, 2009)

The band’s 2nd major tour for 2009 will take place in China. Due to the high demand for the band in Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu and Chongqing, Monokino returns to these cities. The tour commences in Shanghai where Monokino played sold out performances last year. There are also a number of cities in the tour where the band has not previously played and which the band sees as challenges waiting to be conquered:

In 2008 and 2009 much was written in China about Monokino:

“Although they are mostly melancholy songs, you might want to cry, but then again, you might want to hear it loud, you might want to dance and sing along with it.” In Music (China 2008)

“The music is rich, interesting, danceable, and touching, with influences of pop, classical and film music. The singer has a fragile but beautiful voice singing beautiful melodies.”  Yin Yue Fei (China 2008)

The Netherlands also praised the band and included articles and reviews in The Press, Het Parool, Oor, ELLE, etc.:

“A really enjoyable LP, one that is choc-full of great synth pop. I find this LP weirdly addictive. A bobby Dazzler, gloomy, introspected, and stripped back to a Gothic grumble that threatens to go all Joe Meek on you. “  Incendiary Magazine (2009)

“With a band like ‘Monokino’, indie-loving the Netherlands may again be fortunate.” Yeah, in music we trust! (2009)

“Synths and bizarre bleeps together create a bold and original sound. Not so simple indie, and that with only one EP released before. While ‘Human Error’ is packed with samples and background sounds, it is still very comfortable to listen to. ” Oor (2009)

“It is therefore time that the Netherlands wakes up and listens to what this band from its home soil has to offer. Monokino is an enrichment for the Dutch music scene. ” File Under (2009)

“We are very impressed with this trio. With great songs like ‘New Kid’, ‘Machine Gun’ and ‘Final Plug’ we will listen to this CD a lot. ” MusicFromNL (2009)

“The text begins thus:” Sex, drugs, rock and roll, the three most boring things in the world “. Make it the chorus and the whole of Europe will sing it this summer. Human Error a beautiful and rich album. With an electronic record this is certainly unprecedented warmth. ” (Tubantia) 2009

“This album demonstrates an almost perfect balance between electronic sounds, guitar and the song itself. Definitely one of the more interesting indie bands coming from The Netherlands these days. ” Gothtronic.com (2009)

“I would love to play with them again.” Kristeen Young (support Morrissey 2008)

“Monokino, operating with a drummer since last year, is one of the best Dutch indie bands.” 3voor12/Nijmegen (2008)

“This trio puts a very unique, idiosyncratic sound down, primarily due to the androgynous voice of George van Wetering. We hear various influences, OMD, Placebo snatches and even Joy Division. Please let these guys come to Belgium soon! ” LiveXS (2008)

“The striking interplay between kitsch and chill, combined with super-tight live shows, has enabled Monokino to perform in exotic places. The band flirts in its first album, Human Error, almost inimitable in pace with the confident, exaggerated sentiment, both lyrically and musically. ” Muziek.nl (2009)
