New Shows, New Album, New Line Up

Monokino is currently in the studio mixing new songs for their 2nd album. It will see the light of day in June 2012. To keep busy Monokino will play 4 shows in January and February. The set mainly consists of new songs. Also, there has been a shift in Monokino’s line up. Keyboardplayer Yu Jin has called it a day and has decided to work and focus on her solo career in Germany and China. Yu Jin is replaced by a brand new synthesizer.

Monokino Tour 2011: Canada / USA

Monokino is proud to announce that they’ll be touring through the North-American continent the entire month of June. Between the 2nd and the 26th of June, we’ll play 12 gigs, of which 3 are festivals, spread over 6 cities, covering a total of 3851 miles and averaging 321 miles between performances. The longest trip ranges from Toronto to Calgary (1409 miles) and the closest gig to Amsterdam is in Montreal (3715 miles), which will also be the first. During this time, sunny weather is expected during 67% of total hours spent inside, meals will consist of 86% barbecue meat and mean gig duration approximates 38 minutes.

The tour schedule includes three festivals:

- NXNE (Toronto, Canada): two shows on the 17th and 18th (Other bands include Aids Wolf, Deerhoof, Black Flag, DEVO, Art Brut, Dum Dum Girls, Chad van Gaalen, Dirty Beaches and Descendents.)

- Sled Island (Calgary, Canada): two shows on the 23rd and 24th (Other bands including Blonde Redhead, the Dandy Warhols, Off Montreal, Buzzcocks, The Raveonettes.)

- Weapons of Mass Creation (Cleveland Ohio, USA): one show on the 11th (Other bands include American Werewolves, Tom Evanchuck and Red Sun.)

The rest of the tour consists of club shows spread over three different cities:

- New York: three shows on the 6th, 7th and 8th (with Kristeen Young and Love Inks)

- Montreal: two shows on the 2nd and 3rd (with HonHeeHonHee)

- Rochester: one show on the 12th (with Freezepop)

Monokino will be touring as a duo. George van Wetering and Wouter de Buck play an electronic set with new songs and arrangements tailored for the tour. They’ll have you posted on every detail of the tour: keep those social media in your direct vicinity so you don’t miss out!

Das Publikum proudly presents the music video of Monokino’s ‘New Kid’, and welcomes you to the unique and wayward universe of director and scriptwriter Erik Alkema. New Kid, from the critically acclaimed album Human Error, is released by Konkurrent / My First Sonny Weissmuller in Benelux countries and by China’s largest independent record label Modern Sky in China.

The catchy electronic rock track is now visualized by Amsterdam based artist Erik Alkema who designed all featured puppet characters. Shot by camerawoman Lonneke Worm, they take the stage in the form of a procession for an adolescent in his big bubble of unlimited possibilities. We follow a parade traveling through the Dutch polder-land where they meet, and are obstructed by the world.

Erik Alkema is a multi-media artist who showed his autonomous works in different exhibitions. He used to be one of the organizers of the successful hipster-party Multisexi in Studio 80 in Amsterdam, for which he also made the video-visuals and created puppet-performances. His first documentary film will be premiering in January 2011.

The video was produced by Jaap Hermans of Das Publikum, the director of recent music video’s by El Pino and the Volunteers and Schradinova.

Video ‘New Kid’ has been video of the week at Stereogum.com together with video’s by Scissor Sisters, Broken Social Scene, Adele, Suckers, Joan As Police Woman, Fujiya & Miyaga and Tapes ‘n Tapes. ‘New Kid’ was also voted as best video on 3voor12/Giel Beelen tv show ‘Afzien‘. The video will be shown on MTV’s Brand New Channel. It’s been praised and shown by many international (and Dutch) blogs and websites like booooooom.com, 22tracks, Job de Wit, Your Music Today, Glamcult, De Pers, Curated, We Are Selecters, Het Parool, Woozy, Sinemaspot, Tape.tv etc. etc.
