The remix CD is accompanied by a CD with 9 acoustic songs. The song “New Kid” was sung by American pianist / singer Kristeen Young (known for her tours with Morrissey and her latest album “Music for Strippers, Hookers, and the Odd On-Looker). This version of New Kid was recorded by the legendary Tony Visconti (producer of David Bowie, T-Rex, The Stranglers, Morrissey, Kashmir etc. etc.). He also produced the song.

In addition to the Dutch pavilion, Happy Street by John Körmeling, there will be a multifunctional space in Shanghai where exhibitions, performances and meetings are held. The second building is called the Dutch Culture Center, and is located in the center of Shanghai. The DCC is a completely renovated factory building from the ’40s with an area of 1400 m2.

Currently Monokino is having a break from touring, whilst working on new material, an acoustic set AND a remix album (see above) which is scheduled to be released in China early 2010.

During 2008 Monokino toured China twice, playing at both the Midi Music festival and the Guangzhou Music Festival as well as in numerous name clubs in Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Guangzhou and Chongqing. Supported by consistently good reviews of their debut album, Monokino will revive their 2008 Chinese tour commencing in October 2009.

The band’s debut album “Human Error” came out in late 2008 on China’s famous indie label, ‘Modern Sky’. In 2009, the album was also released in the Netherlands by ‘My First Sonny Weissmuller’. Monokino toured the USA in 2009 playing at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas with Boys Noize & Kap Bambino. In New York, Monokino supported Kristeen Young (known for her work with David Bowie, Brian Molko, Morrissey and producer Tony Visconti).

The band’s 2nd major tour for 2009 will take place in China. Due to the high demand for the band in Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu and Chongqing, Monokino returns to these cities. The tour commences in Shanghai where Monokino played sold out performances last year. ‘Dan zeg ik dat Monokino originele indie-electro uit Amsterdam is. En dat we al succesvol zijn in China.’

Hoe beland je als band in China?

‘Een paar jaar geleden speelden we op het Chinapopfestival in de Melkweg. Daar ontmoetten we muzikanten die ook op het Midi Music Festival (groot rockfestival in China, red.) zouden spelen. Zij gaven onze demo aan de organisatie en in 2006 hebben we er gespeeld.’

Jullie toetseniste komt bovendien uit China, toch?

‘Ja, Yu Jin zat in Cobra, een bekende Chinese rockband. Dat speelde ook mee. Nu spelen we in China in clubs waar bands als AIR ook spelen.’

Hoe leerden jullie elkaar eigenlijk kennen?
‘Yu Jin woont nu in Duitsland en ik heb daar gestudeerd. Onze drummer is er later bijgekomen. We kunnen goed samenwerken, Yu Jin heeft alleen meer ervaring. Dat heeft wel eens conflicten opgeleverd, haha.’

Waar gingen deze conflicten over?
‘In het begin had Yu Jin heel specifieke backstage- en hotelwensen; dat was ze zo gewend met Cobra. Toen heb ik uitgelegd dat er hier veel meer bands zijn dan in China, dat de concurrentie hier groter is en dat haar eisen hier dus niet zo gepast zijn.’

Wat is jullie hoogtepunt in China?
‘Ons optreden in Shanghai, een geweldige internationale stad. Het concert was helemaal uitverkocht, en we speelden ook heel goed.’

Kun je de tour door China in vijf woorden omschrijven?
‘Primitief. Enthousiast. Wild. Overvloedig. Er is daar altijd een overvloed aan mensen. De enige keer dat er niemand kwam was omdat de plek waar we speelden bijna onvindbaar was.’

Dat was meteen het dieptepunt?
‘Ja, haha. Het lag echt helemaal verborgen op een industrieterrein.’

Een gevalletje drie man en een paardenkop.
‘Ja, maar ik heb wel vaker voor zo weinig mensen gespeeld hoor. Ik blijf gewoon mijn ding doen.’

Wat was het eerste nummer dat je schreef?
‘Dat was op mijn zestiende, een Smashing Pumpkins-achtig nummer. Dat was gewoon plagiaat, haha.’

Naar welke muziek luister je nu?
‘Ik luister o.a. naar Air, Depeche Mode, Deerhoof, Santogold, Telepathe, The Pet Shop Boys. En ik luister ook naar Kristeen Young: met haar hebben we in Amerika getoerd. Zij klinkt als Kate Bush, maar ik vind haar eigenlijk nog beter.’

Hoe zie je de toekomst?
‘Ik hoop dat we nog meer optredens krijgen in Nederland. We worden in ieder geval opgepikt door de media: we stonden op de voorpagina van De Pers en in de OOR. Het voelt goed, we denken dat het wel moet lukken. En anders kunnen we altijd nog naar China emigreren.’

March 2009. Monokino will tour the USA in March and April 2009 and attend the SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas.

Monokino will play a showcase together with Berlin act Boys Noize on Wednesday the 18th @ Elysium (705 Red River St) – 11 p.m.

Not sure if this is really 2009 but this years SXSW headliners are DEVO (with Tricky), Tori Amos and Primal Scream. Other shows will take place in New York, Boston & Providence. January 2009. Last year Monokino recorded the song “New Kid” (with only piano arrangement, some guitars and vocals) during a studio session at Soma Records in Shanghai. Soma is one of Shanghai’s best known indie labels. “New Kid” now features on the compilation CD, “Indietop”. This CD features mostly young, Shanghainese artists.

Press and websites in Shanghai are reporting that Soma brings a significant change to Chinese underground music. “Shanghai has been long ridiculed as Beijing’s ugly musical sister.” So things are changing, Soma has been recruiting Shanghai’s top talent and to promote the label’s upcoming releases, a large showcase was held at the Dream Factory last month.

The song is mixed and produced by singer Li Pang of Shanghai band Crystal Butterfly, and is different from the piano version on the cd “Human Error”, which was released by Beijing label “Modern Sky”. Monokino met Li Pang 2 years ago in Shanghai when the band was performing there and in Beijing.

November 2008. We’ve just completed a successful tour of China in September, October and November. It seems that we have so many fans in China and our fan base continues to grow and grow in that country. Our best shows were in Chongqing, Chengdu, Beijing (Midi Festival 2008) and in Shanghai. Thanks to everyone who supported us and helped us during that tour.

Die dritte Station von „Deutschland und China- Gemeinsam in Bewegung“ findet im Herbst 2008 in Guangzhou (Provinz Guangdong) statt.

Vom 27. September bis zum 20. Dezember 2008 ist auch in Guangzhou das Ziel, gemeinsam mit Partnern aus der Provinz Guangdong, in den Bereichen Wirtschaft, Kultur, Wissenschaft und Bildung Veranstaltungen zum Thema „Nachhaltige Urbanisierung“ durchzuführen.

October 2008. The October edition of the Chinese version of the Rolling Stone magazine features an article about Monokino (page 21). 5 other major magazines (pop music, so rock, no music, modern player and creative city) will publish articles about Monokino later this month.

September 2008. Close to the new CCTV tower in Beijing, Creative radio production recorded an interview with Monokino. The recording has been sent out to 200 different radio stations and will be broadcasted all over China. The show features 2 new songs from the new album.

August 2008. (For Dutch – Click here) Monokino just signed a record deal with China’s biggest, most famous indie label, Modern Sky. Monokino has enjoyed much critical acclaim in recent years, and signing with a large label like Modern Sky will be a huge step for the band as its debut CD in China will be distributed all over the country. Piracy is rampant in China, but Modern Sky has a good reputation and Monokino has a lot of trust in this company to protect the band’s intellectual property and reputation.

Modern Sky will have the exclusive licensing of the Monokino CD called “Human Error” within Mainland China. Modern Sky world partners include companies such as EMI, Pias, Beggars Group, Cooking Vinyl, Gronland, and G-Pop. The label’s foreign releases in China include Radiohead’s “Kid A,” Mogwai’s “Mr Beast,” and albums from Echo and The Bunnymen, Bauhaus, and others. Modern Sky also organizes its own music festival in Beijing. Headlining the festival in 2007 was the American band, Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Rumors were that Radiohead would be headlining the festival this year, but the Chinese government hasn’t been that willing to invite foreign bands over, most likely due to worries over fears of unruly crowds and the country’s image with regard to the summer Olympic games. For these reasons, The Beijing Midi Music Festival was canceled in May of this year. For the record, Monokino doesn’t support the boycotting of performances in China by Dutch bands as it is almost impossible to get into China during the Olympics to play protest songs.

Modern Sky bands play at all the best clubs in China. Because of the minimal touring infrastructure there, Modern Sky’s connections are of great value to Monokino. Compared to just five years ago, Chinese cities turn up more frequently on the touring schedules of Western bands. This year Nine Inch Nails, Avril Lavigne and Sonic Youth all played in China. Like many other Western acts, Monokino really enjoys playing in China because audience members have very few opportunities to experience foreign bands. The New York Times report: “When the Yeah Yeah Yeahs played the Modern Sky Festival, a three-day event at Haidian Park on the west side of Beijing, the fans waited in reverential silence between songs but erupted once the music kicked in, with fists in the air and young women screaming in the front.” Monokino received the same enthusiastic reaction during their show at the Midi Music festival in 2006, as part of their first Beijing and Shanghai tour.

This September and October, Monokino will return to China to promote their CD. Monokino will be performing at various clubs throughout China. Highlights will undoubtedly be the upcoming Midi Music Festival and the Modern Sky Festival, both to be held in October. Monokino will subsequently return to China at the beginning of November for a major German festival to be held in Guangzhou.

March 2008. Wij doen niet alsof er niets aan de hand is. Er is al jaren “iets” aan de hand met de mensenrechten in China en onderdrukking van Tibet. Dat is niet iets van de laatste paar maanden. Wij doen niet mee aan het hele circus rondom wel of niet naar China gaan. Alleen al het feit dat muzikanten nu ineens gedwongen worden een statement te maken over de mensenrechten aldaar heeft ons zeer verbaasd. Het komt er bijna op neer dat je, als je WEL naar China gaat, geen belang hecht aan mensenrechten. Dat is natuurlijk de omgekeerde wereld. Wij gaan naar China voor de burgers van China. Wij brengen een album uit in China omdat er vraag naar is. Burgers hebben nog steeds niets aan de nieuw verworven vrijheden (zoals het beluisteren van ‘westerse’ muziek) als erg geen bands naar China komen. De Chinese regering doe je een plezier, zij hebben liever niet dat rockbands hun kant opkomen, vooral bands die politiek geëngageerd zijn. Het is ook niet voor niets dat er nog steeds een censuur- commissie is in China. Erg realistisch om te denken dat het leed over zou zijn voor de spelen was het niet. Racoon is nogal ongenuanceerd. “Die rot Chinezen houden het nog vol ook. Ze hebben miljoenen doden op hun geweten, bizar!” Moet China maar gewoon weer op slot? CJ, een beroemd Chinees protestzanger mocht tot 1998 niet meer optreden (na een verbod van meer dan 10 jaar!), we zouden blij moeten zijn dat we China in kunnen. Verder is het verschil tussen ons en bands als Peter Pan Speedrock (die niet eens zijn uitgenodigd door het Holland Heineken House, maar wel boycotten…..heel raar) dat we zijn uitgenodigd door Chinezen en niet door Hollanders. Het is fantastisch om te zien dat er dingen georganiseerd worden als het Midi Festival. Dit doet de Chinese regering niet.

Yu Jin:

The main reason I don’t want to make any statement is that I don’t want to be one of the many bands making boycotting China statements. Who cares about what they or I say? Even if Bono would say something, the Chinese government wouldn’t care. They might be happy that these bands won’t visit China. They think rock bands (in China they think all bands are playing rock ‘n roll ) are dangerous for Chinese people. This was why my former band Cobra was not allowed to be on television. I grew up during the cultural revolution, what I learned only followed what Mao said, what I know about history was from the red book, I was never taught to think anything myself. I never heard a word about human rights and democracy until China opened in the 80’s. I respect people who care about the human rights in this world. Especially when they are pop stars, when they try to do something about it. I am lucky that I was born in Beijing, I was born in a better situation. I didn’t have to work under the ground, to get coal in a mine and might die one day from the very bad working conditions and I didn’t have to be one of those who was sent to Africa to work cause they don’t have a better choice, and might die one day from the African civil war. I know a lot about people that have no rights at all during the cultural revolution. I was treated as a criminal cause my boyfriend was not Chinese. What I want to say is, I know China needs democracy. I have so much respect towards the human right fighters. And I feel sorry that I cannot do anything for the others like they do. It is just that I don’t see any point in making a statement about boycotting. And also there is no point in the boycott statements from all the Dutch bands. I will still go to China, but it doesn’t mean I support the Chinese government. If I tour in China with Monokino, it is the best I can do for my own country. I would understand a boycott against the band bløf.

March 2008. Maybe you’ve all been really really (really) worried about which side Monokino is on, but herewith we just want to let you know Monokino is NOT boycotting China. There is no Olympic boycott or whatsoever from our side. It’s a pity Bløf does not acknowledge their invitation from the Holland Heineken House, however we look forward to receive ours any day now. Since we have to make a statement about this subject, it will be on this site soon.

“Toen hij voor Studium Generale in 2006 het festival 9V organiseerde, trad daar de tweemansband Monokino op, met een in Duitsland wonende Chinese op keyboards en een Nederlandse jongen op gitaar en zang. “Dat vond ik een erg goed optreden, maar ik vond wel dat ze een drummer misten. Na het festival hebben we contact gehouden en afgelopen december heb ik voor het eerst met ze meegespeeld. Dat beviel zo goed dat ik met ze meeging voor een optreden in Berlijn. Inmiddels heb ik zeven keer meegespeeld. Dus ik zit nu echt bij de band. “Hoogtepunt tot nu toe was voor Van Gastel het optreden dat Monokino vorige week gaf in het Amsterdamse Paradiso.”

June 2006. During our China tour, China Radio International has done a live-broadcast with Monokino on INET radio. Monokino was interviewed and listeners could win Monokino’s autographed EP. Check it out right here or view some pictures (by INET) of us in the studio here. Yu Jin was also interviewed by Dutch radio station Kink FM earlier this month. Kink FM plays our song ‘Trendy Café’.

April 2006. From May 1st to 4th, 2006, the MIDI Music Festival will take place in Beijing, China. Monokino was invited to play in the festival after our performance in the 2005 China Festival in Melkweg, Amsterdam. The four-day MIDI Music Festival in Beijing originally started as a small stage for students of the Beijing MIDI School of Music. Very quickly, the festival expanded into the biggest open-air music festival in China, with an average of 80,000 visitors. The festival showcases a variety of punk, rock, metal, pop and jazz music and musicians.

Apart from this performance, we can be seen in several other venues in Beijing and Shanghai.

At the moment, Monokino is being filmed by two filmmakers from Berlin, who are making a documentary for television channel ARTE about the tour and pop/rock culture in China.

We’ve been working in a studio in Hamburg (view pictures) on our first EP, which will be released first in China. Beginning in May, the EP can also be heard in Japan in an online music store and radio show, sponsored by Japanese advertising agency, Hakuhodo.

October 2005. On October 15th Monokino will be playing at the China Festival in the Amsterdam club, Melkweg. We’ll be supporting Beijing’s no.1 punk and rockbands Subs and Muma.
